Ask Nancy: “What Do I Do If I’m Too High?”

Hello, my lovelies.  Welcome to the first edition of “Ask Nancy,” where you can submit questions to me in the comments and I’ll answer them! As consumption of marijuana becomes more and more popular both medically and recreationally across the country, this burning question has even the highest tolerances wondering– how do I come down? Maybe you ate an edible that decided to take a little too long to reach it’s peak, or maybe you tried to impress your friends in the smoking circle and inhaled a little too much. Or perhaps it’s as innocent as medicating for the first time and not realizing that dosages matter! Regardless of how you made your way here, I have compiled a list of anything that’s ever been suggested to decrease your high.  Fret not, puppets… help has arrived.

DON’T PANIC

Anxiety is one of the most common side-effects of imbibing too much cannabis, and most of these tips are good for decreasing anxiety in any state.  Staying calm and taking deep breaths will help to lower your heart-rate, getting more oxygen to your brain which is a tried and true way to calm yourself down.

HYDRATE

best-water

Drink water like you’re addicted. Hydration is so important when medicating.  It can combat pesky dry-mouth and help keep you in the zone of a familiar action of sipping and swallowing.  Not to mention drinking enough water can help you flush whatever’s in your system faster with more frequent bathroom trips.  Note: alcohol is not hydration–in fact it will increase the effects and increase THC blood concentrates. So stay away from that and stick to some cold, refreshing H2O.

PINCH OF PEPPER

Apparently, black pepper contains terpenes that synergistically combine with the terpenes in cannabis products, and some people swear they are instantly calmed as a result.  Chew on a few peppercorns to calm your paranoia and get back to the feel-goods.

PINE NUTS AND PISTACHIOS

Similar to the idea of the peppercorns, pine nuts and pistachios also contain synergistic terpenes that help calm down the freak-outs.  The only problem will be when it’s time to stop eating pistachios.  You’re on your own with that one.  I still haven’t figured that out, yet.

GET OUT

Changing your environment can make a significant difference to how you process information coming in.  Getting outside in the fresh air will increase your oxygen intake, and if you can get around some nature spots or take a walk around the block –even better. It’s not recommended to go too far from familiar surroundings, especially if you’re paranoid or woozy.  Take someone with you to make sure you’re not too disoriented.

CBD

Kushy-Punch-CBD-60mg

CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabis compound now found in thousands of products anywhere you can purchase cannabis.  I recommend eating a CBD Kushy Punch (here), or vaping on a CBD vape pen for the most immediate results.  CBD has naturally occurring anti-anxiety mechanisms that affect THC receptors and can definitely take the edge off of any high that’s gotten too out of control.

JUMP IN A COLD SHOWER

It’s like coffee for your body.  A cold shower can help jolt your body into alertness, and make you feel more aware.  If a shower is not available where you are, splashing cold water on your face will trigger a reaction where your brain thinks you’re drowning and will heighten your awareness.

TALK TO SOMEONE YOU TRUST

Being anxious and paranoid can be so uncomfortable at times, it helps to have someone else talk to you to distract you from racing thoughts or other side effects from too much weed.  Give a call to a best friend, or if you’re around friends, have them tell you a silly story or a funny joke to get you out of your head.

GET SOME ZZZ’S

Sometimes the only thing you can do to fight the high is to stop fighting it…and give in.  Taking a snooze for at least 30 minutes will be like pressing a re-start button.  Make sure you set an alarm because THC is known for being a fabulous sleep aid and sedative!

Jazzercise

80s-dance

Okay, not literally.  However, exercise in general is a fabulous way to get rid of a high quick! Getting your heart pumping causes endorphins to rush your brain–putting you in a calmer, more focused state.  Give it a try.  I mean, look how cool you’ll look.

LET OUT YOUR INNER FAT KID

It’s well known that THC causes the munchies, but when your anxiety kicks in it’s hard to concentrate on anything. Having a snack or a fatty meal has been known to take the edge off of a severe high. Some people swear by this, others say it can increase your high, so try this with discretion.  Just know that any meal you have while high will be the best meal of your life.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF

Challenge your overwhelmed brain by forcing it to focus on a task like a crossword puzzle, a riddle, or your child’s new common core math.  Distract your mind from overthinking!

ANTI-ANXIETY MEDS

If you find your anxiety has reached panic attack level–and (this is important) you have a PRESCRIPTION for anti-anxiety meds, it may be helpful for you to take them as prescribed.  A panic attack can cause people to think they’re having a heart attack, and send them to the ER. If you feel like your high is heading in that direction, your prescribed meds may be the answer to helping you calm down.  Keep in mind–you aren’t dying. See #1.

UNDERSTAND IT WON’T LAST FOREVER

It may feel like it will never end, but I promise you, it will.  Depending on how much you consumed, and whether you smoke it, ate an edible, what strain was involved and your personal tolerance, your peak high can last anywhere between 30 minutes and 6 hours.  There won’t be any lasting effects except maybe some grogginess. Give it a little patience and you’ll be just fine. Remember: there has not been one case of someone overdosing on marijuana.

SEXY TIMES

pants-party

Sex creates the biggest dopamine rush we can create naturally, and dopamine is excellent at counteracting anxiety! So grab your favorite person, or consider a one-man show and get your butt to that pants party!

COFFEE!

coffee

Coffee won’t decrease your high–but it’ll help you feel more aware.  So if you’re feeling a little drowsy, get your cuppa. It’s not recommended to drink a ton of caffeine at any time, so don’t overdo it.  Just one cup should help!

VIDEO GAMES

pacman

Video games are a tried and true way to distraction. So pull out your smart phone or get on your playstation and put on  your favorite game to get lost in. Being forced to use coordination and problem solving will help reset your brain!

VITAMIN C & B

vitamin C

There are conflicting reports on what Vitamin C actually does to your high. However, some swear that Vitamin C and B help in taking the edge off.  So grab some orange juice and relax knowing that at the very least, you are getting your recommended daily dose and you most likely will not get scurvy.

If all else fails… just

ROLL WITH IT, YO.

It will end, it won’t last forever, you won’t overdose, and you won’t die.  Try to enjoy this new perspective! I promise you’ll be okay.

Love, Nancy.
